ZF Marine (Gears)

ZF Marine Gearboxes

The ZF Marine Group, with five gearbox manufacturing locations in Italy (ZF Padova and ZF Hurth Marine), Germany (ZF Marine GmbH), Brazil (ZF do Brasil) and China (ZF Nanjing Marine Propulsion) produces a wide range of gearboxes for all types of vessels. In addition, these are matched to couplings, shafting, propellers (both fixed- and controllable pitch) and control systems so that the customers can purchase the complete system from a single supplier which provides a world wide sales and service network.

As a result of ZF Marine’s long experience in the design and development of transmissions and backed by the technical resources of the parent company, ZF Friedrichshafen AG – a major supplier of driveline and chassis components to the world’s automotive industry – the marine transmissions incorporate state-of-the-art technology and are designed to meet the most demanding requirements in each market segment.

The Pleasure Craft segment supplies mechanical gearboxes for sail and river boats (10 – 100 kW) and hydraulic gearboxes (100 – 1400 kW) for motor yachts. Products for pleasure craft are available with SuperShift®, for fast, smooth control and with the SmartCommand® electronic control for CANbus installations providing automatic trolling and easy docking modes. There is also a range of 2-Speed transmissions for craft which need fast acceleration.

The Fast Craft segment supplies compact gearboxes for large, high performance vessels such as megayachts, defence craft and fast ferries (1400 kW – 11,000 kW). These larger, compact transmissions installed in luxury motor yachts are particularly quiet running, with special elastic mountings and, if required, shaft brakes. Transmissions for defence applications can be supplied to meet the most stringent shock standards, or noise and magnetic signatures. There is also a special range of horizontal, non-reversing transmissions typically used for fast ferries driven by water jets.

The Commercial Craft segment supplies heavy duty gearboxes for work boats, offshore support vessels, tugs, inland waterway vessels, ocean-going tankers and cargo vessels (100 – 16,000 kW). Since year 2000, ZF Marine has expanded into the Commercial Craft segment and designed a completely new range of heavy duty gearboxes suitable for medium-speed Diesel engines between 2000 – 16,000 kW. These products are designed by ZF Marine GmbH in Friedrichshafen, Germany and are currently produced at ZF Padova, Italy. However, following the establishment of a Joint Venture company – ZF Nanjing Marine Propulsion (ZF-NMP) – together with Nanjing Highspeed & Accurate Gear (Group) Co. Ltd. (NGC), these gearboxes will be assembled in China, starting early 2007.

ZF Marine gearboxes are available for various installation configurations – parallel (coaxial, vertical, diagonal or horizontal offset), down-angle, vee-drive, either close coupled to the engine or free-standing. Large, heavy duty gearboxes are either reversing, non-reversing or direct-drive (without clutch) and there is a large choice of single, double or triple PTOs for driving auxiliary machinery. This wide range of configurations and accessories provides naval architects an ship designers with maximum flexibility to optimise the engine room layout for each individual vessel, thereby saving space, time and money. In addition, ZF Marine’s technical experts are pleased to work together with designers, shipbuilders, owners and operators in feasibility studies and throughout the design and construction phases to solve problems and provide solutions. Following commissioning of the vessel, ZF Marine After-Sales network provides a 24/7 service world wide.
