Napier Turbochargers

A world leader in the design and manufacture of turbochargers, Napier Turbochargers Ltd. is ISO9001: 2000 approved and produces a comprehensive range of turbochargers for medium speed reciprocating engines between 2MW and 16MW, in applications ranging from Marine Propulsion & Auxiliary Power, Diesel and Gas Power Plant and Rail Traction. The NAPIER fleet which exceeds 60,000, continues to expand at an increasing rate in today’s emerging and changing markets with an expanding list of new applications.

Markets

Marine Optimised for variable or constant output, our current portfolio has attracted unprecedented demand due to its solid reliability and dependable performance. Diesel (from Tug to Container Cruise Liner) and Duel Fuel LNG are among NAPIERS expanding list of new applications. We are Type Approved by DNV, Lloyds Register, ABS, and BV. Drawings are approved by RINA, CCS and RMRS. Land Power Plant We are particularly well represented in the increasing Gas Power Plant market as well as HFO burning DPP.


Products

NAPIER ‘7’ Series The highly successful NAPIER ‘7’ series represents our core technology for the latest generation of medium speed diesel, heavy fuel and gas engines. The ‘7’ series products cover engine outputs from 2MW to 6.5MW per single turbocharger. Key technical features are:

  • High Rotor Stiffness – Providing resilience to imbalance caused by fouling and foreign object damage,
  • Cartridge Construction – Improving the efficiency of scheduled maintenance and reducing down time,
  • Squeeze Film Bearing – Improving damping of rotor vibration thus extending service intervals and reducing maintenance cost,
  • Alternative Compressor and Turbine Designs – Facilitating more options for precise optimisation,
  • High Efficiency – Overall turbocharger efficiencies of up to 70%, reducing fuel costs and firing temperatures,
  • High Pressure Ratio Capability – Up to 5:1 can be achieved in a single stage Aluminium compressor without compromising component life,
  • Air Cooled Operation – Reducing the cost and complexity of installation.

  • Genuine NAPIER Parts – We hold an extensive range of spare parts for all NAPIER models. All parts are manufactured to OEM specifications and supplied with a certificate of conformity and authenticity, carrying a full OEM warranty,
  • Service Support – Our Qualified Service Engineers are trained to operate on all NAPIER products. Members of this team can be dispatched day or night to respond to end-user requirements. Furthermore, we design and operate a planned maintenance schedule to ensure your turbocharger continues to perform at its optimum level,
  • Factory Overhaul – We operate a dedicated and independent Overhaul facility from our factory in Lincoln. Our skilled workforce provides a fast and reliable service for all NAPIER products. Turbochargers returned to our factory for repair or overhaul are reconditioned to ‘as new’ and returned with a full warranty and OEM guarantee,
  • Customer Empowerment – A growing number of engine builders and operators prefer to deal with engine and turbocharger service as a single system. Our answer to this is to empower our OEM customers to service, overhaul, and repair NAPIER turbochargers, with full technical support and training from the product factory. Logistics become less complex and more efficient,
  • Training – We offer comprehensive training for all NAPIER products on operation, installation and maintenance. Training courses can either be given at our factory in Lincoln or at the operator’s facility.

Retrofit Turbochargers

We produce a range of specially adapted turbochargers to retrofit Non-Portfolio NAPIER products as well as other manufacturer’s turbochargers. All of our retrofit products are mechanically interchangeable yet offer the reliability and efficiency expected from our ‘5’ and ‘7’ series products. The addition of a retrofit NAPIER turbocharger can have major benefits for the engine operator, such as:

  • Improved fuel consumption,
  • Reduced engine emissions,
  • Reduced through life costs,
  • Reduced thermal loads on the engine,
  • Increased power (where engine auxiliaries allow).

Identical positioning of major engine interfaces enables change out to be performed with minimal mechanical and operational disruption.
