ABB Turbo Systems (Turbochargers OEM)

ABB Turbo Systems

Founded in the 1920’s, ABB Turbo Systems has specialised in turbocharging medium size to large diesel engines. Time and again, our years of specialization have brought revolutionary advances in the turbocharger sector for diesel and gas engines. The result has been technological leadership, and ultimately, market leadership – a position we continue to strengthen further.

Range

The ABB Turbo Systems range of Turbochargers has a model for every two- or four-stroke diesel engine, designed to operate economically within the 500 to 25,000 kW power range. Worldwide over 180,000 ABB turbochargers are in operation onboards all types of vessels; container and cruise ships, tankers and ice-breakers, high speed ferries, LNG carriers, and river ships.

TPL..-A: The 4-stroke Powerpack

Designed for four-stroke diesel engines in the power range of 2,500 to 12,500 kW per turbocharger. Features:

  • Axial turbine, suitable for constant pressure and pulse turbocharging
  • Two different radial compressor designs covering the full range of pressure ratio and volume flow rate requirements
  • Bearing assembly incorporating free-floating thrust disc and squeeze oil damping technology
  • No water-cooling
  • Integrated turbine and compressor washing nozzles
  • Proven turbine containment
  • Round gas outlet flanges; no need to fit adapter pieces
  • Oil inlet and exit located at bottom
  • Modular design; variable positioning of casings and flanges

TPL..-B The 2-stroke powerpack

Designed for two-stroke diesel engines in the power range of 5,000 to 25,000 kW per turbocharger. Features:

  • Simple, robust and compact design
  • Radial compressor, axial turbine
  • Inboard sleeve bearings, lubricated by the engine lube oil
  • Uncooled casings, no water connections
  • Much smaller number of parts than the VTR
  • Integrated washing device for the turbine and compressor
  • Very high efficiency and large volume flow rate
  • Integrated emergency lube oil tank

TPL..-C: The Advanced 4-stroke Powerpack

Designed for advanced medium-speed 4-stroke diesel and gas engines (3,000 to 10,000 kW per turbocharger). Features:

  • Modular, compact design featuring easy maintenance and variable positioning of casings and flanges
  • New radial compressor and axial turbine for increased volume flows, efficiencies and pressure ratios
  • Compressor stages with recirculation for enhanced surge margin and enlarged map width
  • Allows compliance with new, stricter emissions regulations
  • Axial and radial gas inlet casings, with one or more inlets, for pulse and quasi-constant charging systems
  • Compressor cooling option extends application range with aluminium wheels
  • Sturdy foot and new filter silencer design minimize vibration

TPS..-D/E: The performer

Designed for high-speed diesel engines, small medium-speed diesel engines and gas engines (500 kW to 3,200 kW per turbocharger). Features:

  • Mixed flow turbine with nozzle ring for constant pressure and pulse applications
  • Different radial compressor designs covering the full range of pressure ratio and volume flow rate requirements
  • Single-piece, oil-cooled bearing casing (water-cooled casing for gas engines)
  • A new internal plai bearing design with squeeze film
  • Clamp connection flanges for flexible casing orientation and easy disassembly, even after long periods of operation
  • Proven containment with internal and external burst protection rings
  • Oil inlet and exit located at bottom

TPS..-F: The high performer

VTR: The Classic

Covers the diesel engine output range of 1,000 to 3,200 kW. Compactness is achieved through the use of internal plain bearings lubricated by the engine lube oil system.

VTR: The Classic

Designed for two-stroke low-speed and four-stroke medium-speed heavy duty diesel engines (about 700 kW to 18,500 kW per turbocharger).

Classification

Each turbocharger is manufactured, installed and documented according to the quality management system certified by the ship classification companies.
